Fitzpatrick Scale

Understanding the Fitzpatrick Scale and How It Relates to Your Treatments at RiverPark Aesthetics

At RiverPark Aesthetics, we provide personalized, safe, and effective treatments tailored to your unique skin needs. We use the Fitzpatrick Scale, a classification system that categorizes skin tones based on their response to sunlight and ability to tan or burn, to customize treatments for each patient. This ensures that we use the right approach for your specific skin type, delivering optimal results.

What is the Fitzpatrick Scale?

The Fitzpatrick Scale ranges from Type I to Type VI, with each type corresponding to different skin tones and responses to UV exposure:

  • Type I: Very fair, always burns, never tans
  • Type II: Fair, burns easily, tans with difficulty
  • Type III: Medium, sometimes burns, tans gradually
  • Type IV: Olive, rarely burns, tans easily
  • Type V: Brown, very rarely burns, tans darkly
  • Type VI: Dark brown or black, never burns, always tans deeply

Understanding your Fitzpatrick skin type helps us provide the safest and most effective treatments, especially with advanced technologies like laser procedures and microneedling. Here’s how we apply the Fitzpatrick Scale for our services at RiverPark Aesthetics.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is one of our most popular services. With our dual-laser system, we can treat a wide range of skin types within the Fitzpatrick scale:

  • Types 1-3 (light skin tones) receive the Alexandrite laser, which works best for lighter complexions.
  • Type 4 (light olive skin) also benefits from the Alexandrite laser, though we use it with more caution for this skin type.
  • Types 5-6 (dark to very dark skin) get treated with the YAG laser, designed specifically for darker skin tones, ensuring both safety and effectiveness.

Laser Tightening Facials

Our Laser Tightening Facials stimulate collagen production and improve skin firmness. We treat patients with skin types with Fitzpatrick scales 1-4 for these facials, which work best for lighter to medium skin tones, including olive skin (Type 4). Unfortunately, this treatment is not suitable for darker skin tones due to the risk of hyperpigmentation.

Diffuse Redness Facials

Our Diffuse Redness Facials address skin redness and conditions like rosacea. These facials are most effective for patients with skin types with scales 1-3 (light to medium skin). Lighter skin tones absorb the laser energy more easily, which helps reduce redness and inflammation.

Pigmented Lesion and Vascular Treatments

We treat pigmented lesions (like sun spots or freckles) and vascular issues (such as broken capillaries or spider veins) for patients with skin types with scales 1-3. These treatments rely on the absorption of light by pigmentation or blood vessels, which works most effectively with lighter skin tones.

Microneedling

Microneedling improves skin texture, reduces fine lines, and promotes collagen production. At RiverPark Aesthetics, we can treat skin types with Fitzpatrick scales 1-4, with light Type 5 skin also being acceptable. This treatment works well for most skin tones, though we take extra care with darker skin tones to ensure we achieve the best results while minimizing the risk of hyperpigmentation.
